Types Of Acoustic Bass Amp Devices

By Kathrine Lasseter

Searching for an acoustic bass amp is confusing simply because of the myriad variety of options present in the market today. There are jazz and rock versions, plenty more for other genres too. These choices make it rather difficult to comprehend for a rookie.

This means that rookies will be stuck trying to figure out what they want. Even skilled musicians find this hard to understand. Here are four types that are most common today.

Valve amplifiers are also called tube amplifiers and they are the most ancient kind of amplifiers around. The reason why these devices became popular was because they were introduced somewhere around the time that electric guitars started making inroads into the music industry. No wonder that many old school performers still use these amplifiers today. While they are hard to maintain they are still the most deep sounding devices around.

The second type called strong state amplifiers do not use tubes but use transistors to produce the amplification effect. They are much more heavy duty and lighter to use. However, some musicians complain that this kind of amplifier produces a sterilized and flat sound.

The modeling amplifier is usually geared towards musicians who work with computers. This is because it utilizes digital processing software along with an amplifier to recreate the effect of tube amplifiers. Hence, with a variety of settings, one can easily remake sounds typically associated with a tube amplifier. A hybrid system usually mixes together sounds from all generations. To manage this it uses not just transistors but also tubes. Together, they are capable of blasting out tube amplifier sounds as well as transistor amplifiers.

Not only is there a difference in digital and transistor output but also a major distinction between the methods of reverberation used by the amplifier. There are only two types that can be used namely digital and springtime reverberation. For the former one uses only electric circuits but for the later one has to rely on transducers and a microphone.

Many guitarists and band members spend a lot of their time trying to determine which type of amplifier is the best based on the kind of sound it produces and the effects it can make. While many are inclined to go with digital technology others stay with transistor and tube based technology. Regardless of your choice of acoustic bass amp, you will eventually have to learn how to use all.
