What To Consider In Irish Dance Lessons

By Kari Ratliff

The increasing popularity of the Irish dance has given way to a lot of schools who are offering it amongst the courses they teach. As a prospective student, you will have to consider several important issues so you can choose a suitable institution. Here are some of the things you should think about if you want to get Irish dance lessons.

Check the qualifications of the teachers. The course will impart a better learning experience if you have chosen a school where the teachers have undergone formal training. If you are dropping by for a visit, observe how the teachers interact with their students and assess the efficacy of their approach.

Consider what will be covered in the classes. Find out how many students are in the class and if you will be mingling with students who have differing skill levels. Check how many classes there are in a week and how long each session will take. If you need private lessons, then find out if the school can accommodate you.

Look at the rates at which these courses are being offered. Some types will be more expensive so check if this is within your budget. Ask how the payments will be made and when you will have to make payments. Check if there are any other fees aside from the tuition.

Schools can teach the course for leisure or they can be grooming your child for competing in various events. Competition can be a great tool for development but some individuals may just want to learn the course for pleasure. Make sure your child is comfortable with the concept and prepare yourself for more expenses if she competes.

In order to practice or compete, you will need to have appropriate footwear. Make sure you get the right size for yourself so you can be comfortable even during long hours of training. There are also certain restrictions regarding the type of shoes you can wear so check on the regulations first. Ask your instructor for recommendations on the shoes you should purchase for practice and for competition.

The competitions are called feis and they involve different types of dancing, with dancers of different skills competing. You will have to pay a certain amount to get yourself registered. In these competitions, you will be able to pick what type of event you want to participate in.

You will also need to prepare a costume for the event. This can depend on the school you are going to especially if you are going as a team. Typical costumes consist of skirts that are a couple of inches above the knee, undershorts, and tights. These can be bought but the school may be able to rent the costumes for the participants.

Irish dance lessons are available in numerous ways, including online courses. Institutions will have information about their courses on their website so you can easily check what they have to offer. Check these sites for more information about school history and rates. Take advantage of directories so you can easily find a school in your area.
