A Fun Way Of Creating An Abstract Watercolor Painting

By Janette Barnes

With everything happening in an instant these days, people always forget to let off some steam from time to time. However, some have figured out a lot of ways to unwind. Most of the time, they rely on different art forms to keep themselves entertained. While some do it by listening to music, others watch their favorite movies. For others, they just stick with the basics of painting in expressing themselves. An interesting form of art that anyone can enjoy doing is abstract watercolor painting.

Abstract art form is based on non realistic portrayals of things instead of showing an exact depiction of shapes and sizes. It was made famous in the 20th century by renowned artists such as Jackson Pollock who used a spattered technique while Piet Mondrian used his geometric approach. All through the years, a lot of changes in styles and colors have been done by different artists.

With a variety of techniques applied by abstract painters, one is quite popular and it is watercolor painting. The use of watercolors is deemed to be one of the effective ways in successfully portraying emotions of an artist. Moreover, it is still popular until now because it is manageable to use and it is a good medium in displaying the creativity of an artist.

In watercolor painting, there is no need to possess the skills of a professional painter. While there are other coloring materials that one can use, sticking with watercolors can be fun and easy. Here are some steps in creating an abstract masterpiece with this medium.

To start, one must prepare a watercolor paper, watercolor and a brush, masking tape, rubber cement, a hair dryer and a pen. Use the tape in sticking the watercolor paper on a flat surface. However, you might have a problem taking off the tape later which can ruin your paper, so a trick has to be done.

Before taping, try sticking the tape to a cloth and take it off quickly. By doing this, the tape will come off easier after sticking it on paper. The next step has to do with picking the colors for your artwork. Choosing three basic colors for the painting is advisable for a better outcome.

Get the rubber cement and splat globs of it on the paper. Then, let it dry it off with the use of the blow dryer. Now, it is time to paint using the watercolors without focusing on the placement of colors. You can go over the globs of rubber cement and paint as freely as you can.

The last step requires you to repeat the same process that you did before. Splat more globs, dry them off and paint them again. You may create as many layers as you please. If you are contented with the layers, you need to rub off the globs using your fingers. You may now use the pen to outline the patterns that will come out after rubbing off the globs.

When talking about masterpieces, it does not really have to be difficult and costly. Just make sure to be positive and prepare in advance. If you have the right attitude to do it, then you are ready to make your very own abstract watercolor painting.
