Actor Auditions - What can be expected?

By Kylie Grimes

Acting is a profitable profession but also one of the toughest. Before you avail yourself for the auditions, here are some of the things you need to expect:

1. Read the whole script and make sure that you understand it. You'll be needed to understand the character you'd be representing; and how he/she relates with other characters in the movie. It is anticipated of you to show the different angles your role has towards other characters that relate with him/her in the act. Also, knowing your character's role would be crucial and don't be frightened to read from the script if you miss one or two words; but do not overdo it.

2. Mind your behaviour. Most of us have particular mannerisms which may not be acceptable at the auditioning room. A number of them are chewing a gum, chatting too much and forgetting your roles, touching the director or any of his/her possessions, smoking and other similar habits. You could be used to them; but it's recommended to shun these behaviors or else you'll piss off the casting director and thus not stand a chance.

3. Show respect to everyone in the room for auditions for actors. When you enter the audition centre, there may be 1 or 2 individuals who you'll simply recognize, but also absolute strangers can be there too. These folks may be the stylist, camera man and can be a representative from a selected acting organization. To check you, the representative may wear shabby clothing such that you could be almost convinced to assume that the person is not good. Then he may wait till all the others have asked you their questions and then ask you a rather straightforward question. If you reply rudely or mockingly, most probably you'll be thrown out of the door.

4. Be brief and do what's expected of you. When it's your turn to be auditioned, the panel would already be beat since other people had already passed thru them. Make their job simple by giving a very transient introduction of yourself and offer your best performance at the shortest time possible. Avoid repeating words or saying things that do not make sense as this is going to be an indicator of nervousness.

5. Always be prepared for acting auditions. The panel may instruct you to do something that you did not think of; for example, they may need you to run around the podium in a particular demeanour or laugh in a selected style. Always be prepared for the unexpected as they may wish to test whether you could be creative enough to fill some blank spaces on the personality they have selected for you.

6. Stage presence. Try and be part of those you are working with. Remember the panel has taken its time to assess you and they have to be treated deservingly. Answer the questions they ask you and laugh with them when they crack joke, but also be aware as they may be testing you. Just do anything to show them you are there with them and not day dreaming.

Finally, when signing out of the audition centre do not forget to thank the people that assisted you. These are the people you talked with from the time you came to when you leave the grounds. Also, ensure you sign out your name as this could be used to test the quantity of time you spent at the auditions.
