Dancing is a great activity for your children, and if they are already doing ballet or some other dance, then you should put together a dance recital for all of them. YouTube is a great place to post videos showing how their kids are doing. You can spice things up by suggesting that they have a fun theme with each dance recital.
Set up a fundraiser a week before the school dance to raise money. Door to door cookie sales work very good, and you can dress them up like the girl scouts. Beef sticks are very popular, and you could have them sell them at school. Whatever you do, make sure the students have plenty of things to choose from.
A few weeks before the day of the school dance, get a group of students together to do a dance off. Consider using senior males. Separate the group into 3 separate groups for the dance off. A funny dance should be prepared, so everyone has a good laugh. An example would be having the boys dress up in sequins and do the fox trot. Use a ballot and have the students vote for a winner at the assembly on the day of the dance.
We recorded our last dance recital and put it on YouTube, it had a theme based upon some old fairy tales. You might have a class dance that tells the story of Little Red Riding Hood. Jack and the Bean Stalk was one that we put on last year, and the kids loved dressing up as Jack. Little girls also love performing as fairies.
International cultures are one way to include everyone in your dance recital. Authentic costumes should be used, to show respect for these different cultures. I like to invite students from Pakistan when I include them in my dance recital. Introduce your students to the international music, and culture.
Consider holding a beauty pageant for your school dance. On the assembly day of the dance, put it on. Pick form the students who are on the government of the school. Have the female members of court emcee the event. During the pageant, make them line dance. Ask the members to prepare a real talent for the show if you have a talent show. Make sure that they know that you will announce the results at the dance later that night.
Prepare engaging activities to get your students worked up about doing some line dances at school. Some schools have a hard time getting students to come out to the dance. One way to get more participation is to give them fun things to do. Our dances always run short of money, so I like to have the kids do things that bring in some cash.
Make sure that your ballet studio is ok with you picking a lot of themes, as some of them will not allow it. Dancing elves were one of the costumes that we put the kids in for our Christmas theme, and we posted videos of it on YouTube. St. Patrick's Day dancers might perform to Celtic music, if you pick this theme. On Christmas, you could use some standard Christmas music, as it works very well for dance recitals. Take out your calendar and schedule the next dance recital, make sure to set them near the holidays.
