Paper Train Models For All Enthusiasts

By Traci Witt

For those who like to collect model trains and other various replicas there are other ways to get them if the traditional methods are a bit too expensive. Paper train models are easy to obtain and make and they do not take much to get started. All you need is a computer and a printer and some thick paper like card stock and you have all that you need.

Even the people who are real big enthusiasts who try their best to get only the best looking ones that look just like the real things. Sometimes they will have a half and half set, where they will have some parts premade plastic and metal replicas while the rest can be made at home from paper sets printed off the Internet.

Of course, there are some of the more complicated and intricate models that are much more detailed than the free versions. You can buy kits off of the Internet that have trains from different countries too. The kits often come complete with instructions and other detailed versions like the train stations and cars for the entire set.

If you are going to making these as opposed to collecting the metal ones that you do not have to build you are doing so because of the journey to the finished product. The buildings also come with some of these and are complete from the past like from the 1830's all the way to the present. The come in HO scale so you can even put them next to your standard trains.

It is not just the transportation industry that comes in these versions but everything else as well. If you are making a set from a military scene you can get the soldiers, the buildings, the vehicles, and the trains. Everything that you need can be easily downloaded and printed. That is the allure of these model sets, because you can download, print, and build almost right away.

The amount of things that people can build is limitless. People even make paper guns and ships too. The best way is to get a bit of a thicker medium like card stock to print the outlines on. If you end up using the same stock that is used for a copier or printer your model will fall apart very easily. That is the last thing you want after spending so much time making them.

The entire process does take time and it takes a lot of patience, just like building a traditional model. They might not move like a real one and they may not light up and blow smoke, but from a distance they often look like the real thing. That is, providing it was done right. You can get the entire line and have a historical model right there in front of you.

There are those who enjoy the hobby so much that they pass it on to their children. Paper train models is definitely an acquired taste, but if there is something more that you are looking for you can always construct the entire cityscape out of paper too. There is nothing stopping you now.
