Where To Have Photography For Sale

By Kathryn Neal

It seems like everyone has a camera these days which make it hard to stand out from the crowd and find ways to have photography for sale in good locations. These are a few ideas that may help get starting artists motivated and provide different locations that may help with that process.

Think about who the target market and where would be typical places that they would go. For example, if the artist is wedding photographer, going to bridal shops would be a great place to start. But if one is into landscapes of a specific area, maybe going to businesses or restaurants might be an idea. This brainstorming is an important part of the marketing before going out and trying to sell the work.

For artists that live in a city, look into local farmers markets, craft shows, or other events. These places reach out to a wide range of people and it is a great way to get exposure even if there are not any big sales. There is a downside to going this route though. There are the initial costs, which can be hard to pay upfront when there does not seem to be much in return. At some of the art fairs, the cost for having a booth and setting it up can be a pretty penny. This is on top of having to print, matte, and frame photos seem like a lot of money to dish out. So one other option might be to start with cards and smaller prints and see how they go. But also remember that most of these expenses are once off, or very infrequent.

Those that might be rather tight on cash though should think about throwing their own exhibition and doing some self-promoting. Find other artists in the area and see if they are interested in coming together for a night of great art. Invite friends, family and tell them to spread the word. The cost of appetizers for the guests can be split amongst the artists, and each artist does not have to have a huge display, making it cheaper.

Getting exposure and ones name out is an important part of selling the photos. Look into local non-government organizations and see if they have upcoming events that might need to be photographed. Another option is to offer one of the pieces for a silent auction at an event that is going towards a good cause.

Selling photos online is probably one of the most common and popular ways to sell it. This is especially true for those that do stock photography. If this is something that sounds interesting, make sure to look at how much of the profit comes back and how much the company takes. If nothing else, it is a great way to get people to notice some of the work.

Then there is the personal website that works wonders if done correctly and if targeted to the right people. It is easy to have an option on the online portfolio to sell photos in various sizes. All the buyer has to do is simply click the button and it is on their way. Having a place where people can see the artists work and come back to later is a great resource to have.

These are just a few ideas of where to have photography for sale. There are numerous other options, but it just goes case by case. Some of these places may not reach the target market, so think about where would be great places to show the work. Most importantly, persistence is key. People may not fall in love with the pieces right away, but it is just a matter of time and continually working on improving ones photography as well.
