Karan Johar's latest, "Student of the Year", packs a catchy soundtrack

By Rohini Nadia

The phrase "traditional party song" has been nothing more than an oxymoron, until now. For his upcoming film, director-producer Karan Johar has included the song "Radha". A traditional song-turned-club-thumper of sorts, "Radha" was unveiled just recently, on the 26th of September, 2012. In the video, the movie's primary cast including Siddharth Malhotra, Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan are clad in ethnic wear and are seen dancing to the track's catchy beats. With a traditional groove to it, "Radha' has vocals by Shreya Ghoshal, Vishal Dadlani, Shekhar Ravjiani, Udit Narayan and gives the movie's soundtrack a little versatility.

For Student of the Year, Karan Johar roped in the much sought-after music-director duo Vishal and Shekhar, who've composed all the music of the film. The soundtrack that was launched on the 31st of August has lyrics written by Anvita Dutt Guptan. Karan Johar's Student of the year album also includes songs like "The Disco Song" that includes parts of the classic pop song "Disco Deewane" sung by the late Nazia Hassan.

The Disco Song's chorus features Nazia Hassan's dream-like vocals while the rest of the song has been completely restructured by Vishal Shekhar. The composers have also successfully managed to add a serious groove to the song, without compromising on the original parts sung by Hassan. The Disco Song also includes a vocal track by Benny Dayal and Sunidhi Chauhan.

Karan Johar has given The Disco Song just enough bling to make it a treat to the eyes. The film's lead casts Siddharth Malhotra, Varun Dhawan and Alia Bhatt, who are also making their first big-screen appearance, have stolen the show with their glittering performance in the music video. There have also been rumors of megastar Kajol making a special appearance for the song, which is bound to work as a crowd puller. Kajol has done cameos for Karan Johar films in the past including Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna and Kal Ho Naa Ho. Also, given the fact that Karan considers the actor to be a lucky mascot, the audience might just be treated by her appearance.

Karan Johar has on previous account shown his love for music and dance, and has also choreographed the song Ratta Maar. Due to the lack of a choreographer on the day the song was being shot, Karan choreographed for the dance sequences himself. The director has also recently judged a dance show, which marked his first appearance as a judge on the small screen. The Siddharth Malhotra-starrer Student of the Year is one of the best examples of Karan Johar's love for foot-tapping numbers and is one of the most anticipated films of the year, scheduled to release on the 19th of October 2012.
