What To Expect From A Directing Workshop

By Alison Wilcox

There are so many people who aspire to become big time directors because they have the passion and imagination for creating stories and seeing them materialize. Of course every aspiring director has to begin somewhere before he becomes big. That is why it is important to first attend a directing workshop before going to on the big screen.

Now the foundation of any film will actually lie in the plot and the whole concept of the story behind the movie. The story is the whole heart of the movie or film simply because without a good story, there will be no movie. So that is why it is essential for students to learn how to write stories well because the story will be the base of everything.

The next thing that they will learn would be to write a superb script. If the story is the core of the film, then the script is the skeleton that will hold everything together. It is only through a good script that the characters can come alive and follow the flow of the entire story.

Once he has tackled the story making and the script writing, then he must know how to create his own story board. To give beginners an idea on what a storyboard is, it is a short board where one draws out the events that are happening in the film. The storyboard will determine whether the movie will be a good one and will be used as a reference later on.

After that, he must know how to create a set. Of course it is the artists and the assistants who will do the creation of the set but the director will be the one to conceptualize the entire thing. Basically, this workshop will allow a junior director to release his creativity and turn it into something concrete which is the set of the film.

Now it is also very important for directors to know the basics of acting because they will be handling actors. If the director would want the actors to do as he says, then he should be able to speak on their terms. For that reason, directors must study how a person can emulate emotions, how he can manipulate body language, and how a person moves.

Probably the most crucial filming technique that one must learning in directing would be how to manipulate camera angles. This is so because if one knew the right angles for each scene, then he can create a better effect. Notice that a movie with only one camera angle may seem a little boring and lifeless.

Now the last part of the directing workshop would actually be learning the kinds of special effects that movies use. Of course everyone knows that without the special effects and video editing, it would be hard to create a nice and modern movie. That is why trainees are taught how to use the basic computer programs for these. So if one would combine all of these lessons together, then he will definitely be able to create a film that everyone will love.
