'Buried' Movie Review

By Chris Smith

Lionsgate released a new Ryan Reynolds branded,mystery/thriller movie called "Buried" into theaters a couple months ago. I checked it out the other night, and I agree with the top critics' positive assessment of the movie.

In my opinion the film featured a very unique storyline with tons of drama. However, I think I caught a case of claustrophobia by watching it and imagining if I was buried alive in a coffin. It stars: Ryan Reynolds and Jose Maria Yazpik.

"Buried" centered around character Paul (Ryan Reynolds). He's a truck driver over in Iraq, and wakes up to find himself buried alive in a coffin, tied up with only a cigarette lighter, cell phone,a couple of glow lights, knife, and a flash light. He eventually finds out about all these tools at different times during the movie.

He starts panicking. As the film continues, he's able to untie himself, get the lighter, and calls every damn body he knows. After getting a couple of answering machines and leaving a few messages, he's eventually connected with a hostage specialist in Iraq who is working frantically to try and find him.

Paul gets a couple of calls from his kidnappers. They demand $5 million dollars from the embassy for them to release him. Unfortunately,a number of bombing events make it more difficult for the hostage specialist to find him,and the movie eventually ends with a shocking conclusion.

In my opinion the flick was great. Even though it was about a full hour and 20 minutes of just a man trapped in a coffin,it managed to show some exciting scenes. There were a few events that caused other things to enter the coffin with him that weren't good, and it was interesting to see what he did to get out of those predicaments with his very few resources.

The film nearly gave me claustrophobia just watching it because these movies are really good at bringing the person into the world of the movie. It was really hard to imagine being trapped in a wooden coffin like that. I started thinking about what the hell I would do if that happened to me. It was a very interesting and entertaining movie to watch. I gave it an A rating for the uniqueness alone.
