Why Not Try Avatar Costumes

By David Lawson

Winner of three Oscar awards for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and for Best Visual Effects, James Cameron's movie Avatar is an epic tale that has captured the hearts and imaginations of the world. This year, trick or treaters and party goers will be wearing their fanaticism on their sleeve (and maybe even on their faces) when they put together their own avatar halloween costumes. You can be sure that you will see more than one Avatar at your door!

First, decide your role for the event. If you are a male, you can choose from the appearance of a Na'vi warrior or that of Jake Sully's Avatar for your costume. If you are a woman, you can choose to dress as either the Na'vi female Neytiri or as the Avatar of Dr. Grace Augustine.

If you are dressing as a Na'vi, will will want to first put on your bodysuit so that you do not ruin it when you try to pull it on later. Braid your hair, or put on your braided hair wig. Put in your cat-eye contact lenses. Then apply blue body paint as a base for your makeup all over your face, neck and down to where the body suit will start to cover. Make sure you remember to paint your ears. When it is dry, you can put the bodysuit back over onto your shoulders. Using a brush, paint black stripes from your crown toward your brows, do the same from the side of your cheeks toward your nose, stopping mid-cheek. Now apply white dots in between the stripes and under the eyes. Apply a pinkish blush for women, a bronze for men, on the cheeks. Then put paper ears onto bobby pins and stick into your hair above your ears. Also make certain to include feathers in your hair.

The Na'vi are For a Na'vi, a native of the planet of Pandora, remember to wear beads on your wrists and around your waist and an arm gauntlet or two, especially if you are an archer. Both male and female Na'vi wear an apron of sorts to cover their groin area, you can do this simply with a piece of cloth that wraps around and covers you both front and back. Remember, of course, that you will have a tail as well.

Jake Sully, on the other hand, is an easy costume for you to make. Start with braiding your hair of putting on a braided wig. Then you can follow the directions on how to do the face painting with a few modifications. Instead of putting on the bodysuit first, put on a blue long sleeved shirt before starting your makeup. Cover the shirt with a field jacket, and put on a pair of khaki colored pants with black or dark shoes or boots.

It is possible to find avatar halloween costumes for sale. You can find costumes for Neytiri and Jake Sully at just about any costume shop. Some of the costumes include a mask for Jake Sully, others do not. Most of the costumes for Neytiri do not include a wig. The costume for Neytiri, for example, includes a jumpsuit, tail, apron, feather necklace, a bracelet, and an arm gauntlet.

Some parents do not like their children to wear masks. If you are one of these parents, following the tips above on how to paint the Na'vi face will make it possible for your child to enjoy the full experience of playing at being part of the Avatar phenomenon.
