Martin D28 Acoustic Guitar Buying Guide

By Joel Midgen

The Martin D28 Acoustic guitar hasn't changed much since it was unveiled in 1934 by the C.F. Martin Co. of Nazareth, PA. Renown for its booming sound, the Martin d28 quickly became a country music favorite-notable fans included Hank Williams, George Jones and Elvis Presley.

Today the Martin D28 is primarily known for its amazing durability and its warm sound. Despite their high prices--a Martin D28 can run into the multiple thousands--the can represent a rather sound investment that rises in value--like a piece of art.

If you are on the lookout for a Martin d28 guitar, here are some guidelines to consider so you get the best deal possible.

Tip No.1: Back to Basics

Oftentimes the no-frills version is the way to go. And by going with a bare bones Martin D28 will definitely give you all the performance you'll need.

Made with solid east Indian rosewood, this guitar is nearly as beautiful on the inside as it is on the outside. And boy...is it good on the inside. The Sitka spruce braces gives it some majorly clean highs.

Must be why the Martin D28 is standard issue on most country music recordings.

Tip No.2: Live Like a King

The King himself, Elvis Presley, loved the Martin D28. Not just for its looks, but because of its major league bass frequencies and awesome rhythm sound.

But unlike other acoustics, I won't name any names but Gibson comes to mind, the martin d28 guitar doesn't sacrifice any treble for those trademark bass tones. This makes for a beefy quality sound that fills in perfectly for the country/rockabilly sound.

To commemorate the King's adoration, Martin has unveiled a special edition Martin D28 M to honor the crooner. Limiting the run to just 175 models, this super rare guitar comes with a custom leather-embossed cover--complete with the name Elvis Presley.

Now you can't take this to the beach and bang on it. It's a collector's item that will cost you some dosh. But looking at the unpredictable stock market, maybe it's safer to invest in this than some stupid nasdaq company.

Tip No. 3: Make Your Own

Another great option is to make your own. It's actually possible to buy plans for a Martin D28. Though it may not be perfect, and requires some skill, it can be a great way to fool your friends--and save a ton of money.
