Reviewing Bernese Mountain Dog Breeders Virginia Kennels

By Alison Wilcox

If you prefer a large dog, as opposed to a smaller lap pet, you should check out the Bernese Mountain Dog Breeders Virginia kennels to see whether this might be the perfect pet for your family. The breed originated in the Berne Canton high in the Alps of Switzerland. As one of the four Swiss Mountain dogs, the Bernese is colored like the others, but is the only one which has a long-haired coat.

A hardy animal is needed when working in the Alpine mountains. The Swiss canines were used to herd livestock, pull small carts and watch over the owner's property. With a high level of loyalty and socialization, the animal is also intelligent and calm in temperament. They are assured in their attitude.

It is likely that the breed would have died out in the late 1800s had it not been for the actions of a Swiss breed fan by the name of Franz Schertenleib, who actively worked to find examples of good breeding stock. Thanks to his efforts, the dogs were brought into the United States by 1926 and have been recognized as a pet since that time.

Officially recognized colors for this animal are either in two tones or three tones. The standard color markings are black, rust and white or black, tan and white. The alternate markings are two-toned. Black and rust, black and white, or rust and white are the options that are available. In each case the fur is long and thick.

The dog has a regal conformation. He is heavy in body and head. The height ranges from 27 inches to 23.5 for females. Because the dog is a working class animal, he requires exercise. Being cooped up all day in a small house or apartment would not provide an outlet for a high energy animal. The owner in this situation should be prepared to spend time walking and playing with the dog.

The breed was recognized by the American Kennel Club in 1937. The placement was within the Working Class with is not hard to understand. These dogs participate in conformation showings, among others on the AKC show circuit. Additional descriptions about conformation standards are available from reputable breeds, rescue organizations or by checking online.

Because of their size and heavy fur coat, the dogs thrive in cold weather. The undercoat and long silky fur top coat means they are likely to shed. The responsible owner will make sure to do daily brushing and grooming for the health and comfort of the animal. Choosing this breed for a hot climate might not be the kindest option. The owner who makes provision for the comfort of the animal will be rewarded by a healthy and happy dog.

Once you have settled on this breed as the one for your family, choosing the right Bernese Mountain Dog breeders Virginia kennels is as important as picking the breed. These large dogs are not long-lived, and they do have a prevalence of hip dysplasia. Your breeder can discuss the genetics of the particular dog that you are considering.
